Horseshoe crabs have been on the planet three hundred times longer than our own species, yet over a million humans owe their lives to this living fossil. Horseshoe crab blood clots when it comes into contact with certain bacteria and thus it is the standard test for pharmaceuticals and has prevented the lethal infection of countless humans. However, the medical applications of the horseshoe crab are by no means its only interesting attribute. This creature also plays a critical role in the shorebird migration, is the only chelicerate with compound eyes, is the focus of an ancient Japanese legend, and is the basis of Nobel Prize winning research. This website seeks to explore the fascinating characteristics that make the horseshoe carb both unique and valuable. Also, this website strives to illuminate the factors that threaten the future of the horseshoe crab. It is my belief that the horseshoe crab is remarkable and worthy of protection. I am happy to note that conservation efforts are in effect and proving successful! Please click the button below or visit the heading above to get started.
